A Healthy Holiday

I am at least a 4th generation Californian, which can mean one of two things: either I am certifiably kooky, or that I know absolutely nothing about winter weather. I know the second one is true. As for the first, let’s hope the verdict is still out.

I once took a trip to Iowa in the middle of one of the coldest winters they had experienced in a while, and you would have thought I was a 300 pound lineman had you only seen me outside. Simply getting out of the car would force me to don at least one extra jacket, and if I knew there would be prolonged snow exposure (read: anything over 5 minutes), I had to make sure I had on not 1 but 2 pairs of long underwear. Upon entering a new establishment, as I struggled to peel off layer upon layer, my comrades would say “She’s from California” and the chuckles and nods of understanding would immediately follow. Snow is beautiful to look at, but I will holiday somewhere tropical, thank you very much.

Whatever your preferred climate, however, as the temperatures drop, we often feel the need to hibernate a bit more, snuggle in front of the fire, and stay indoors. The urge to jump out of bed and get your day going with a jog is less likely than it was even several weeks ago. Add to the mix the myriad holiday invitations that begin marching to your mailbox like toy soldiers in droves (and what ensues at such parties), the rush of shoppers descending upon stores as if Armageddon is lurking very nearby, and the “pinch your cheeks” aunt who will no doubt tirelessly ask you any number of embarrassing or unanswerable questions; and you have a recipe for an unhealthy disaster.

It’s no secret that many of us will gain a spare tire in the coming months, but mom’s homemade pie and the office cookie platter are only partially to blame. Even sans spare tire, we can still feel the overwhelm and stress that accompany this supposedly “cheery” time of year. That is why it is vitally important that we all set ourselves up for success.

The only way I know how to successfully manage the bustling holiday season is to make sure I have a system for accountability. When left to my own commitments, I fall short; however, when I know I have someone who expects me to keep those commitments, I will make sure to follow through. Though accountability plays a key role in successful outcomes in general, when it comes to the realization of your health and fitness goals during the holiday months, it is crucial.

What typically happens is that come Halloween, we begin to hop the proverbial track a bit more than usual. We miss a few days of exercise, we eat an extra piece of cake, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Sometimes, we feel a bit guilty and stay on track for a few weeks, and then comes Thanksgiving. You know the story. It’s all downhill ’til the ball drops and we wake up in a champagne-induced stupor vowing to hit the gym (or join one) once and for all.

With all this falling off the treadmill, it is no wonder the gyms love us come January. In order to save you the aggravation of stressing out, getting depressed, and having to start from scratch, I have decided to offer a simple accountability teleseminar this holiday season. I invite you to join me in staying Healthy for the Holidays!

Literally Literary

I saw a survey recently that stated over eighty percent of Americans would like to write a book. Wow. That burning desire to share our stories so that they may survive posthumously has not gone the way of the dinosaur. What was once a campfire surrounded by tribes of storytellers, has taken on a wider perspective in the form of the written word. Fast track it across the planet via world wide web and you have a story that can now be told simultaneously in every living room, bedroom, and even campfire around the planet. Technology is amazing.
As part of the afore-mentioned eighty percent, I must admit that putting pen to paper seemed a relatively simple task as it seems I have a propensity toward the written word. All told, the book was written in 4 days. Yes, four. Once I began to wrap my head around the topic and solidify my ideas, writing the book became as simple as just about everything else in life.
Simple. That is, until the voices in my head began to murmur their usual quips. “Who are YOU to write a book? Nobody will buy it. You can’t write about health. You’re not a doctor.” Lovely. Thanks a million.
Hence, “soon-to-be-author” became my title. Soon. What does that mean anyway? Either you are or you aren’t. And so continued the battle within while those anxiously awaiting the message were forced to settle for “soon”. All because of a ridiculous battle that no one else was privvy to.
My determination for authenticity has often blazed the trail through the mindless chatter and in order to fulfill my purpose this go-round, I knew what must be done.
Write a Book. Check.

Puddle Jumping

The California Coast has been a bit more “season”y than us Californians are used to.  One day, I am donning my rain boots and sipping tea and the next I am slipping on a swimsuit and sunglasses.  A few days ago, after a particularly showery weekend, my 2 ½ year-old son and I were out walking.  He nearly jumped out of his stroller when he spied a rather large grouping of puddles and cried, “Mama, let’s jump in puddles!”

I have to admit that, at first, all I could think about was the fact that we were still a mile from home, the wind was beginning to pick up, and we didn’t have anything except a light blanket to keep warm.  Reluctantly, I undid his stroller as he jumped repeatedly into each and every puddle with a huge “SPLASH”.

As I watched him for a moment, I began to think about all the “puddles” I had avoided for fear of getting a little wet or muddy.  Though the fears may have seemed small, it became clear to me that these everyday fears were the ones that were truly holding me back.  My fear of sharks (though one I intend to conquer) isn’t really something that keeps me from accomplishing my dreams and goals.  It’s the fear of making that phone call, of taking that small leap of faith, or making that minor change that keep me from achieving the life of my dreams.

I was reminded of the concept I had read so much about…feeling the fear and doing it anyway.  Staring those big fears in the face had always seemed simple.  It was the smaller fears I had allowed to overrun my desires.

That day, as I laughed and jumped in the puddles with my son, I was overwhelmed with joy.  In that moment, I was a huge success.  I still may not be the most fearless woman you have ever met, but you can bet the next time I see a puddle, I’m jumping in!

The 6-Week Transformational Body Challenge is Here!

Many of you have expressed interest in working with me on a more regular basis.  Up until now, I have not been able to do one-on-one coaching due to time constraints.  I have, however, now created a program to help you for 6 consecutive weeks and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it!

The 6-week body transformation challenge will consist of 6 information calls along with a workbook for you to follow along.  The calls will be recorded and sent to you immediately following, just in case you can’t make it to all of them.  As an added bonus, I have also decided to conduct 2 live coaching calls where you can call in and get all your questions answered.  For these, I will stay on the phone as long as necessary to get through your questions.

Along with the informational, interactive calls and the coaching calls, I have recently been introduced to a revolutionary new superfoods shake called Shakeology and I have decided to include a 30 day supply with the program!  In the 2 weeks I have been using it, I am down 5 pounds and feeling fabulous!  The program also includes 2 DVD Shakeology workouts to keep you on track throughout the 6 weeks!  If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of this amazing program, please visit www.beachbodycoach.com/MindOverFatter

Lastly, I will also be pairing you with your own Fitness Friend.  The two of you will be responsible for holding each other accountable.  I will give you all the tools to do so.

So, for 6 weeks you will have the following:

  • An inspirational wellness coach
  • Nutrition tips
  • Superfoods shake for nutrition and calorie control
  • 2 DVD workouts
  • A workbook with information to assist you such as recipes, workout suggestions, etc.
  • Access to a fitness & nutrition expert
  • AND a Fitness Friend to hold you accountable

All you need to do is commit to following the program!  I am committed to your success.  I know you can and will achieve the health of your dreams because you deserve it!

I would love to assist you on this path!

Love & Gratitude~

The Magical Present…

A few people have asked why I haven’t been blogging lately.  Well…I have to admit, I have been waiting.  Waiting for the perfect topic, for more inspiration, for my son to take a nap, for the next excuse…

As I stepped into the car the other day, I heard Eckart Tolle reminding me that waiting is merely taking me out of the present moment and therefore, not allowing me to actually experience the present moment.

My son is now 2 1/2 and I recently took him to Disneyland (several times actually).  I was quickly reminded of all the things I love about The Magic Kingdom.  Watching my son light up when he met Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Tinkerbell et. al. and seeing the joy in his eyes as he danced to the music of the big parade was truly magical.  I was also, however, reminded of something else…the way the park has a knack for attracting loads of other parents, children, grandparents, teens,  and Mickey fanatics.  That meant only one thing…long lines!

Astonishingly to me, my 2 1/2 year old seemed to have more patience than I did at first.  I watched him as he climbed on the walls, played with the chains, smiled at the other kids, marveled at the “Whole New World” around him.  Despite his excitement as we stepped into each new wonderland of rides, he was clearly not waiting for anything.  Everything he could ever hope for was all around him.

Lines are a funny thing to me.  You can always find someone who’s bored, someone who’s running late, somone who’s chronically impatient, someone who thinks they deserve to pass up everyone else.  I would imagine that those folks treat life pretty similarly.

Regardless of the line we must wait in, the schooling we must acquire, or the job we must take on our way to any certain destination, it’s important to consider that life is happening all around us.  Always.  There is no waiting for it to begin and life is truly the greatest ride I have ever not had to wait for.

I am taking my que, son.  I will no longer wait for the perfect topic, more inspiration, ideal conditions, the perfect life…I will create it.

Thank you, Tyler Shea for being my greatest love and my greatest teacher.  I love you.

L&G~
